Sorong, the capital of Southwest Papua Province, is preparing to become the gateway for digital technology development in Papua. This ambition was expressed by Billy Mambrasar, Special Staff to the President for Innovation, Education, and Outermost Regions, as well as National Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Ambassador.
Billy emphasized the importance of strengthening Human Resources (HR) in Sorong to support this vision. “I invite Huawei, a company in the information technology field, to come to Sorong and help strengthen digital HR,” Billy said on Tuesday (July 18, 2024).
In his efforts, Billy encourages young people in Southwest Papua to improve their skills and expertise in technology and digitalization. “Huawei is the right partner to help young people in Southwest Papua become proficient in digitalization,” he asserted.
Yenti Joman, Director of Government Affairs at Huawei Indonesia, also mentioned that currently, there are no Papuan people working at Huawei. “I invite the director to come to Southwest Papua,” Billy added.
Billy hopes that Huawei can open a technology center in Papua. This company, which is on par with Microsoft in terms of global impact and reach, currently operates in 170 countries and has 230,000 employees. “Huawei is also actively opening technology centers, and I hope they open a technology center in Papua,” Billy hoped.
Responding to this, Yenti Joman said that Huawei has a moral responsibility to build competent HR in the digital world. Huawei plans to hold information and communication technology (ICT) training for students, with a commitment to produce 100,000 digital talents. “We initiated this together with the Presidential Staff Office of the Republic of Indonesia in 2020 and it’s already running,” Yenti revealed.
Furthermore, Yenti hopes that this opportunity can be utilized as well as possible so that some students from Southwest Papua can access the ICT education provided by Huawei. “We hope this opportunity can be utilized as well as possible so that some from Southwest Papua can access Huawei’s ICT education,” Yenti explained.
Recently, Huawei and Muhammadiyah University of Sorong signed a memorandum of understanding to develop digital technology in Southwest Papua. This step is expected to strengthen Sorong’s position as a center for digital technology development in the region.
With this initiative, Sorong is expected not only to become a digital technology center in Southwest Papua, but also to open opportunities for young Papuan people to develop their skills and compete globally. Hopefully, this collaboration between Huawei and Southwest Papua can be a great initial step in the digital transformation of the region.
