A new patent application published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicates that Samsung might be exploring a revolutionary foldable phone design. Based on the patent sketches, this phone initially appears like a conventional phone. However, there’s a rotating mechanism that allows the main screen to rotate 180 degrees to reveal a secondary screen underneath. This design reminds us of the unique LG Wing.
As reported by Gizmochina on July 23, 2024, the patent also shows a hinge on the main screen, allowing the phone to fold in half. Combined, these features create a phone with three display modes: a standard display mode, a rotating secondary display mode similar to the LG Wing, and a fully opened tablet mode. The camera module is located in the top right corner, with the charging port, microphone, and speaker at the bottom.
In theory, this design offers the experience of three phones in one device. In its standard form, the phone is compact and convenient. The rotating secondary screen enables more flexible multitasking. When fully opened, the screen provides a large and uninterrupted viewing experience.
However, while this design is interesting, it’s important not to get too excited. Samsung frequently files patents for innovative technologies, but patents don’t always guarantee that the product will be released. Additionally, a complex design with combined hinges and rotating mechanisms could be susceptible to wear and tear and structural problems.
Besides this patent, Samsung also recently filed a patent for a tri-fold smartphone. Both patents indicate that Samsung is actively exploring the future of foldable phone technology.
Even though these concepts may not become available products in the near future, these patents offer a glimpse into Samsung’s vision for the future of foldable phone technology. They show how Samsung continues to innovate and push the boundaries of phone design.
Repiw’s Conclusion
The foldable phone design with a 180-degree rotating screen from Samsung demonstrates a commitment to exploring technological innovation. Although it may not necessarily be released, this patent depicts exciting possibilities for the future of foldable phones.
