Indonesia-Norway Strengthen Joint Commitment on Climate Agenda in Oslo

Oslo – On the sidelines of the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (OTFF) in Norway, Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Siti Nurbaya, met with Norwegian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, on June 26, 2024. This meeting discussed joint efforts in implementing the FOLU Net Sink 2030 policy, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to preserving tropical forests and addressing global environmental challenges.

Before commencing the discussion, Siti Nurbaya appreciated the organization of the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum. According to her, this forum reflects Norway’s strong commitment to preserving tropical forests. “Through collaboration and dialogue, this forum plays an important role in promoting the critical role of tropical forests in biodiversity conservation, climate regulation, and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide,” she said.

During the meeting, Siti Nurbaya highlighted the progress of the partnership between Indonesia and Norway in the environmental and forestry sectors. “Since our last meeting in Indonesia on April 30, 2024, you may have witnessed Indonesia’s commitment to reducing deforestation and promoting the achievement of FOLU Net Sink 2030,” she added.

This partnership was further strengthened with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September 2022. The MoU concerned the Partnership in Supporting Indonesia’s Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Forestry and Other Land Uses, as well as the disbursement of Result Based Contribution (RBC) of USD 156 million. This reflects Indonesia’s achievements in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

Currently, the second and third stages of RBC are in the process of being distributed to implementing parties in Indonesia through the Environmental Fund mechanism. Through this partnership, Indonesia hopes to continue to enhance conservation and emission reduction efforts, in line with the global commitment to combat climate change.
